State Representative Jim Struzzi and Senator Joe Pittman have announced an $8,000 grant for The Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County. This funding is part of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program, which was established in 2013 to provide operational support to museums and historical societies not funded by other state agencies.
“Our county historical society does an excellent job of preserving our local history and our records,” said Struzzi. “Our history is largely preserved and told by a force of dedicated volunteers, and grant funding such as this helps to continue that mission. I am proud to announce this funding for our community and applaud the society for its successful navigation of the grant process.”
Senator Pittman added, “Learning from the past is such an important part of investing in our future. I’m pleased to have worked with Rep. Struzzi and our colleagues in the Legislature to help provide support for museums and historical societies across the state, including the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County.”
The funds will be used to further the society’s mission by employing a qualified museum professional and covering energy costs necessary for maintaining visitor facilities. The society has been operating since 1938, officially incorporated in 1940, under recognition from Indiana County Commissioners as the Official County Historical Society.
Operating with a volunteer workforce guided by a part-time executive director, the society focuses on displaying, preserving, and interpreting local history through artifacts and documentary materials. Volunteers also conduct educational programs both at their location at 621 Wayne Ave., Indiana, PA, as well as within the community.
