Senator Cris Dush and Representative Martin Causer have announced that McKean County will receive over $19 million in low-interest loans for two major infrastructure projects. These funds are allocated to improve water and wastewater systems in the area.
The Bradford City Water Authority is set to receive a $4.1 million loan. This funding will enable the replacement of existing water meters with new ones that can transmit data remotely, potentially saving the authority around $150,000 annually in operational costs.
Additionally, Pennsylvania American Water Company will be granted a $15.2 million loan to address problems at the Kinzua Road wastewater treatment plant. The plant’s equipment, mostly dating back to its construction in the 1990s, has reached the end of its lifespan, leading to issues with effluent levels.
“Both of these low-interest loans are proactive initiatives to ensure the safety and overall quality of McKean County’s water supply,” said Senator Dush. He expressed gratitude for PENNVEST’s role in financing such projects cost-effectively across Pennsylvania without burdening local taxpayers.
Representative Causer highlighted the importance of efficient and environmentally sound water systems for community health and safety. “I support investments like these in our infrastructure systems to improve quality of life in our communities,” he stated.
The Bradford City Water Authority serves households in several townships as well as providing bulk service to Lewis Run borough. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania American Water Company’s project impacts households in Kane and Wetmore Township. The loans carry an interest rate of 1% for the first five years, increasing slightly thereafter.
PENNVEST has been funding sewer, stormwater, and drinking water projects since 1988 using federal funds and other financial resources rather than relying on the state’s General Fund budget.
