State Representative Jim Struzzi announced that the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has approved a resolution designating May 20, 2025, as Jimmy Stewart Day in Pennsylvania. This recognition honors James “Jimmy” Maitland Stewart, a celebrated film star known for his role as George Bailey in “It’s A Wonderful Life,” among other films during his 55-year acting career.
Rep. Struzzi highlighted Stewart’s contributions beyond cinema, noting his service during World War II. “Jimmy Stewart, in addition to being a titan of the film industry, is also a World War II hero,” said Struzzi. He emphasized Stewart’s decision to join the Army Air Corps and serve on the front lines in Europe.
Born on May 20, 1908, in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, Stewart was raised by parents Alexander and Elizabeth Stewart who owned J.M. Stewart and Company Hardware Store. An alumnus of Princeton University, he later received Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson Award for outstanding public service.
In 1941, Mr. Stewart enlisted in the United States Army and commanded a bomber squadron in Europe. His military accolades include the Air Medal, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, and Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1985, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Struzzi remarked on Stewart’s lasting influence on Indiana County: “Mr. Stewart’s impact on Indiana County is immeasurable,” adding that his legacy continues to attract tourists and film enthusiasts to the region.
