The new Emergency Department at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital (PAH) campus has officially opened its doors to patients. The construction of this facility began in June 2024 as part of a multi-phase project valued at $25 million. The newly constructed emergency room spans 14,000 square feet and features 11 treatment rooms.

The design of the unit follows a radial concept, allowing staff to maintain a clear view of all patients. This design was chosen due to the high patient volume that the department handles. Among its features are specialized treatment rooms with enhanced safety measures for those with behavioral health concerns and trauma cases. Additionally, an area within the ER can be set to negative pressure for patients experiencing respiratory issues. The department is equipped with advanced medical technology.

The transition to this new facility was completed overnight on June 18th, guided by a detailed mobilization plan prioritizing patient safety. Patients are directed to enter through entrance 3 via the Rapid Care/Medical Arts parking lot, where handicapped parking and drop-off zones are available near the ambulance entrance.

Jack Sisk, President of PAH, expressed satisfaction with completing Phase One: “We are thrilled to have completed Phase One of this project. While patient flow may change when the Emergency Department initially opens, we want to assure the community that the transition will be smooth and manageable.” He also thanked staff and donors for their contributions to making this $25 million project possible.

Special recognition was given to Diamond Elite Donors who supported various phases of development: The Roberts Family for Phase One’s Emergency Department; Rosebud Mining Company for Phase Two’s Laboratory Services, Outpatient Entrance, and Waiting Area; Fairman Family Foundation & Beverly Fairman for Phase Three’s Radiology Department Entrance; and S&T Bank for Phase Four’s Women’s Center Entrance.
