Senator Cris Dush of Pennsylvania has addressed the recent developments regarding the proposed closures of SCI Rockview and Quehanna Boot Camp. Dush, who has a background as a corrections officer, had previously sent a letter to the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC), Laurel Harry, seeking detailed information on the criteria used for deciding which correctional facilities should be closed.
In his communication last month, Dush requested the names of all DOC steering committee members involved in recommending these closures and asked for supporting documentation. He set a deadline for response by May 2, 2025, and indicated he might use subpoena authority if necessary.
Dush stated, “Since my subpoena warning has successfully initiated a response from the DOC, and a promise in writing to disclose responses to those at the hearings and supporting documentation, I am temporarily suspending my plan to pursue the subpoena process.”
He emphasized his responsibility as both a state senator representing Bellefonte and as Chairman of the State Government Committee. This committee oversees property dispositions through the Department of General Services. He noted that it is crucial to ensure that decisions are based on accurate data.
Dush warned that if the DOC does not adequately address his inquiries in a timely manner with their pending release of information, he will consider issuing a subpoena. He expressed skepticism about what he termed “non-factual assertions” by the Department regarding economic reasons or cost-saving measures behind closing these facilities.
He further stated, “Now is the time for the DOC to officially hit the pause button on any pre-determined deals and completely reevaluate their specially targeted prison closing criteria which holds the fate of SCI Rockview, Quehanna Boot Camp, family-sustaining jobs for hundreds of rural citizens, and ultimately public safety, firmly in the crosshairs.”
