Senator Joe Pittman and Representative Abby Major have announced that Vandergrift Borough and East Vandergrift Borough in Westmoreland County are set to receive state grants totaling $431,078. These funds, provided through the Department of Community and Economic Development’s Community and Economic Assistance Program, are designated for infrastructure and recreational development projects.
Senator Pittman emphasized the importance of investing in local projects, stating, “Investing in local projects goes a long way to help ensure the ongoing vibrancy of our communities.” He added that supporting public safety and recreational initiatives enhances quality of life and fosters economic growth. Pittman expressed pride in advocating for this funding while commending area leaders for recognizing the significance of these projects.
Vandergrift Borough will receive $278,397 for two reconstruction projects: Grant and McKinley Avenue Reconstruction and Ninth Street Retaining Wall Reconstruction Design Projects. The work involves paving approximately 1,030 linear feet of deteriorated streets within the borough. Improvements on Grant and McKinley Avenues aim to reduce safety hazards for motorists and pedestrians. Additionally, there will be a design undertaken to replace the current retaining wall along Ninth Street.
East Vandergrift Borough is allocated $152,681 for its River Park Renovation Project. This project includes resurfacing an existing basketball court, creating a pickleball court, and purchasing playground equipment. These changes mark the first time in over a decade that East Vandergrift has had a fully functioning park.
Representative Major highlighted the importance of these grants by saying, “Both of these grants address important community needs in the area.” She noted that reconstructing the retaining wall on Ninth Street would improve safety for residents while park improvements would enhance recreational opportunities. Major expressed her satisfaction with partnering with Senator Pittman on these initiatives.
