Six grants totaling $874,300 have been allocated for park, recreation, and conservation projects in Pennsylvania. This announcement was made by Senator Joe Pittman and Representatives Abby Major, Donna Oberlander, Jim Struzzi, and Brian Smith.
The funding comes from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Community Conservation Partnership Program (CCPP). This program is managed by the Bureau of Recreation and Conservation to assist local governments, river and trail organizations, land trusts, and non-profits with planning, acquiring, and developing recreational areas.
“These state investments in local projects will help build on the many recreational and natural resources we have in the region,” said Senator Pittman. “I am very pleased CCPP has recognized the importance of these projects within our communities.”
One of the funded initiatives is the Armstrong Trail Development project which received $234,700. This project involves rehabilitating approximately 2.5 miles of trail in Ford City Borough and Manor Township. Representative Major commented on this development: “I’m pleased to see these projects funded. Trails encourage exercise and allow residents and visitors to enjoy all the beauty our area has to offer.”
Kittanning Borough’s Whelan Park will undergo rehabilitation with a $60,000 grant for new play equipment installation among other improvements. Representative Oberlander expressed her support: “This is a great opportunity for healthy physical activity and fresh air.”
A $313,500 grant was awarded for developing the Tide Trail in Indiana County. The Indiana County Conservation District will construct around 3.7 miles of trail including three trailheads. Representative Struzzi noted: “The funding for Tide Trail will bring additional access and improve the quality of this trail.”
Big Run Borough’s Veteran’s Park will receive $65,000 for constructing walkways and parking areas along with other enhancements. Representative Smith remarked: “Our veterans… deserve to be celebrated.”
Other allocations include $73,800 for purchasing trail counters for the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail Alliance Inc., as well as $127,300 for Armstrong Trails Inc., aimed at maintaining trails across several counties.
