Sen. Cris Dush and Rep. Mike Armanini have announced that $335,000 in state funding has been awarded for two community park improvement projects in Elk County. The grants were awarded through the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program, which is funded by natural gas impact fees authorized under Act 13 of 2012.
The City of St. Mary's will receive a grant of $250,000 for the complete replacement of Leathers Playground. The existing play equipment at the park was deemed dangerous and non-compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The new playground equipment, selected with input from the community, will be ADA-compliant and accessible to visitors of all ages and abilities.
Sen. Dush expressed his pleasure in seeing the state funding being brought back to the local economy, stating, "I am pleased to see this highly competitive state funding coming home as a continuing investment in our local economy-essential community recreation areas."
Rep. Armanini echoed Sen. Dush's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of these projects to the community. He said, "As Sen. Dush accurately labeled them, these are true investments... ones which our friends and neighbors enjoy and cherish as part of our communities."
The Borough of Ridgway will receive $85,000 for the addition of the Lyle G. Hall Community Pool splash pad at John J. Collins Memorial Park. The 40x40 cast-in-place concrete splash pad will provide a safe and enjoyable water play area for infants, toddlers, and special-needs children throughout the summer months.
These projects aim to enhance recreational opportunities for the residents of Elk County and promote inclusivity and accessibility. The grants awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority will play a crucial role in making these improvements a reality.
With the funding secured, both projects will soon begin the necessary preparations for demolition, removal, and construction. The communities of St. Mary's and Ridgway can look forward to the completion of these projects and the positive impact they will have on their recreational spaces.
The announcement of the grants highlights the commitment of Sen. Dush and Rep. Armanini to their constituents and their dedication to improving the quality of life in Elk County. The funding will not only enhance the local economy but also provide safe and enjoyable recreational spaces for residents of all ages and abilities.
