Sen. Cris Dush and Rep. Brian Smith have announced that $68,117 in Watershed Restoration and Protection funding has been secured for a project in Heath Township, Jefferson County. The funds will be used to remove a hazardous dam from Callen Run.

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy will be responsible for using the funding to cover the cost of removing the 108-year-old dam, which has been deemed unsafe by the Department of Environmental Protection. The dam poses a safety hazard due to failing infrastructure and cracks in the breastwork. Additionally, it is blocking the passage of aquatic life in this high-quality, cold-water fishery.

Senator Dush emphasizes the importance of maintaining recreational assets for current and future generations, stating, "From pristine streams and our enduring fishing heritage to outstanding boating and camping options, some of the best things about our region are the wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities we have to enjoy, and that should never be taken for granted."

Rep. Smith highlights the positive impact of the project, stating, "Thanks in part to this funding, 10 species of fish will once again be able to access nearly seven miles of Callen Run and its tributaries. In addition to more access, this project will also work to limit flood risk. It’s easy to support a project that’s better for both the residents and our environment."

The project will involve the removal of sediment upstream, the dismantling of the dam, the installation of streambank stabilization structures, and the implementation of erosion and sediment controls. The goal is to restore the natural flow of the stream and improve the overall ecological health of the area.

The funding for this project was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through the Watershed Restoration and Protection program. This program is funded by natural gas impact fees authorized under Act 13 of 2012.

With the removal of the dam, Callen Run will once again thrive as a vital habitat for aquatic life and provide recreational opportunities for the community. This project is a significant step towards preserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of our natural resources.
