Senator Joe Pittman (R-41) has announced a significant investment aimed at improving access to high-speed internet in the 41st Senatorial District. The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) revealed that Verizon and Comcast Cable have been granted almost $6.5 million for this purpose.
Pittman emphasized the importance of high-speed internet, stating, “High-speed internet allows people better access to basic amenities such as education, health care, public safety and government services, and it has become essential for most businesses.” He also highlighted the need to bridge digital divides, especially in rural areas, to ensure all Pennsylvanians can benefit from broadband services.
The grants awarded for projects in the 41st Senatorial District will see Verizon investing an additional $34.7 million to improve access in parts of Indiana, Cambria, and Clearfield counties.
The funding for these projects comes from the federally funded Broadband Infrastructure Program, with a total of $200 million in competitive grants being distributed across the state to areas lacking 25/3 Mbps internet service.
To ensure accountability and transparency, the PBDA requires grantees to provide quarterly and annual progress reports, adhere to state and federal guidelines, and receive technical support. All allocated funds must be utilized by December 31, 2026, with grantees being held responsible for the appropriate use of the funds. The PBDA retains the authority to reclaim any unused or misused funds.
This round of grants marks a significant step in the PBDA's efforts to close the digital divide since its establishment by the General Assembly in 2021.
