State Representative Brian Smith has raised concerns about voter fraud in Pennsylvania, citing recent incidents in Lancaster and York counties. Smith, a Republican representing Jefferson and Indiana counties, emphasized the importance of election integrity as the presidential election approaches.
"In 2020, we were repeatedly told our elections were perfectly fair, and no fraud took place across the country. Yet here we are, with less than a week before another presidential election, and substantial fraud has already been uncovered right here in our Commonwealth," Smith stated.
The investigation in Lancaster County revealed up to 2,500 fraudulent voter registration applications. Meanwhile, York County officials reported receiving "thousands" of election-related materials from a third-party organization. These findings have heightened concerns given that Pennsylvania's General Assembly races can be decided by narrow margins.
Smith called for bipartisan efforts to restore trust in the electoral process. He proposed requiring voters to show identification at polling stations as a straightforward measure to enhance security. "About three of every four Pennsylvanians support the idea, but House Democrats have repeatedly blocked our attempts to get it done," he noted.
Until such legislation is passed, Smith urged vigilance against potential fraudulent activities similar to those discovered in Lancaster and York counties. He also expressed gratitude towards local election workers for their diligence in maintaining electoral integrity.
