State Senator Joe Pittman and State Representative Jim Struzzi have announced the allocation of $350,000 in state funding for economic development and recreational projects in Indiana County. This funding is aimed at enhancing local community infrastructure through various initiatives.

Pittman expressed his support for the funding, stating, “I’m proud to advocate for this funding and commend area leaders for recognizing the significance of these projects, and seeking out assistance from the state level.” He emphasized that investing in recreational and conservation initiatives will enhance quality of life and foster economic growth within the region.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program (GTRP) is providing three grants. The Borough of Indiana will receive $44,912 for McGregor Park expansion and rehabilitation, along with $31,308 for revitalizing Vinegar Hill. Additionally, the Indiana County Conservation District (ICCD) is set to receive $23,780 for the ICCD Canopy Walk and Trail project.

The GTRP is a component of Act 13 of 2012 which established the Marcellus Legacy Fund. It allocates resources to plan, develop, rehabilitate, and repair greenways, recreational trails, parks, and beautification projects.

Furthermore, Center Township has been awarded $250,000 through the Department of Community and Economic Development for improvements to the FMC Sports Complex. This funding aims to enhance park safety and field maintenance. The complex hosts numerous baseball tournaments including regional PIAA events.

“These projects will have a positive impact on the economy of Indiana County,” said Rep. Struzzi. He highlighted that investing in the FMC Sports Complex would help secure future regional tournaments thereby boosting tourism. Completing other projects like the Canopy Walk and Trail will also benefit residents and visitors alike.

Struzzi added that such funding is made possible by natural gas development in Pennsylvania. Programs like GTRP are funded through fees paid by the natural gas industry which showcases benefits provided by Pennsylvania’s energy economy.
