State Senator Joe Pittman and State Representative Josh Bashline have announced the allocation of $600,000 in state funding for Kittanning Borough. The funds are provided through the Department of Community and Economic Development’s Keystone Communities Program. This financial support is intended to aid in the emergency demolition of the McConnell-Watterson building on Market Street, which was declared unstable after it began collapsing, posing a public safety risk.
Senator Pittman commended local officials for their efforts, stating, "I applaud Armstrong County Commissioners and Kittanning Borough Council for working together to ensure the safety of area residents and businesses." He emphasized that the state support will significantly help address concerns and costs related to demolishing the structure.
The decision to expedite the demolition process was made last summer by Kittanning Borough Council due to the deteriorating condition of the building. The council also aimed to assist two businesses on Market Street affected by its proximity.
Representative Bashline highlighted the importance of this funding, noting, "This is a significant investment to address a safety issue in Kittanning." He added that immediate action was necessary given the building's condition and location near other businesses. Bashline expressed gratitude for reaching this solution: "I am grateful to see this solution come to fruition."
