Reps. Marci Mustello and Abby Major, along with Sens. Joe Pittman and Scott Hutchinson, have announced that the Municipal Authority of Buffalo Township will receive a nearly $2.82 million low-interest loan from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST). This funding will support two water-line projects in the area.
One portion of the loan is designated for new drinking water services to 76 residences along State Route 228, including Sunny Lane and Kimberly, Carol, and Crescent Hill drives in Buffalo Township. The existing private groundwater wells are contaminated with high levels of manganese, iron, and arsenic, leading to poor water quality.
“This is an important issue for local families and also a key step forward in developing and modernizing our water infrastructure,” said Rep. Mustello. “I am pleased that PENNVEST has recognized the significance of this project and is investing these funds in the future of our communities.”
Senator Hutchinson highlighted the importance of clean water: “Clean, affordable, and reliable drinking water is among the most fundamental needs of any community,” he stated. “These water line projects will help ensure a safe water supply for more residents... all while maintaining an affordable price point for the Authority’s customers.”
The remaining part of the loan will replace deteriorated drinking water distribution lines on Market, Fourth, and Buffalo streets in Freeport Borough. This includes installing new gate valves and fire hydrants alongside a lead service line replacement project funded by a previous PENNVEST grant.
Rep. Major expressed her satisfaction with state support: “Projects like these are vitally important to people’s health. No one should be without clean, potable water in their homes.”
Senator Pittman emphasized challenges faced by aging infrastructure: “Aging waterlines are problems for communities throughout Pennsylvania... I am pleased the substantial funding approved by PENNVEST will provide support for critical work to improve water quality.”
The Municipal Authority serves 3,016 households across Buffalo Township in Butler County and Freeport Borough in Armstrong County. PENNVEST supports sewer, stormwater, and drinking water projects statewide through loans and grants.
