State Senator Joe Pittman and State Representative Jim Struzzi have announced the allocation of $350,000 in state funding for projects aimed at economic development and recreation in Indiana County.
Senator Pittman expressed his support for the funding, stating, "I’m proud to advocate for this funding and commend area leaders for recognizing the significance of these projects, and seeking out assistance from the state level." He emphasized that such investments are crucial for enhancing quality of life and fostering economic growth.
The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program (GTRP) will distribute three grants. The Borough of Indiana will receive $44,912 for McGregor Park's expansion and rehabilitation, as well as $31,308 to revitalize Vinegar Hill. Additionally, the Indiana County Conservation District (ICCD) is set to obtain $23,780 for its Canopy Walk and Trail project.
These initiatives are part of Act 13 of 2012 under the Marcellus Legacy Fund which supports greenways, recreational trails, open spaces, parks, and beautification efforts through CFA allocations.
Moreover, Center Township has been awarded $250,000 from the Department of Community and Economic Development to enhance the FMC Sports Complex. This funding aims to improve park safety and field maintenance. The complex is a hub for local sports events including regional PIAA baseball tournaments.
Representative Struzzi commented on the potential impact: “These projects will have a positive impact on the economy of Indiana County.” He noted that investment in facilities like FMC Sports Complex would boost tourism by securing future regional tournaments.
Struzzi also highlighted the source of this funding: “It’s crucial to recognize that this funding is made possible by natural gas development in Pennsylvania... These projects are further evidence of the benefits provided by Pennsylvania’s energy economy.”
