Senator Joe Pittman, along with Representatives Brian Smith and Jim Struzzi, have announced the allocation of $1,805,023 in Multimodal Transportation Funding for three projects aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure in Indiana County. The funding was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority on February 24, 2025.

“These projects are an extensive undertaking which aim to significantly improve the quality and safety of local roadways and bridges, benefiting both area residents and visitors alike,” said Pittman. He emphasized that addressing deteriorating conditions will enhance driving experiences, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and improve traffic flow. He expressed satisfaction in advocating for this state support to ensure long-term stability of local transportation infrastructure.

A grant of $855,023 has been allocated to Blacklick Township for replacing and widening the Nehrig Road Bridge. Representative Struzzi remarked, “Growing our economy requires first class roads and bridges. These essential projects will ensure Indiana County residents, emergency services vehicles, transit, and commerce can safely travel throughout the county and pave the way for future growth.”

The funding also includes $450,000 for a culvert replacement on Behm Road in North Mahoning Township and $500,000 for widening and completely replacing the Martin Road bridge in Rayne Township. Representative Smith noted the importance of rural roads: “While not as many cars may travel our rural roads as those in the cities, I would argue they’re even more important.”

The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides grants to encourage economic development while ensuring a safe transportation system is available to Pennsylvania residents. Funds can be used for various enhancements including streetscape improvements, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety measures, connectivity improvements of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.
