Senator Joe Pittman and Representative Josh Bashline have announced the allocation of $1,414,724 in state grants for two development projects in Armstrong County. The funding aims to support local initiatives with long-term benefits for the community.
The Armstrong County Industrial Development Council (ACIDC) is set to receive a $500,000 grant for blight remediation. This will facilitate the demolition of the former Apollo High School in Apollo Borough, a project that has already commenced. The grant comes from the Department of Community and Economic Development's Keystone Communities Program.
"These grants represent a crucial investment in two local development projects which will have a lasting impact on our community," said Senator Pittman. He also acknowledged the sentimental value of the Apollo High School building but praised local council members for their efforts toward economic growth through its demolition. Plans are underway to transform the site into a 45-unit housing complex.
Additionally, a $914,724 grant has been awarded to Elderton School Complex for essential roof and boiler system replacements. Final decisions by the School Board are expected in March, with construction anticipated to start this summer. This grant is provided through the Department of Community and Economic Development's Community and Economic Assistance Program.
Representative Bashline emphasized the importance of these renovations: "This significant investment will ensure everyone inside the Elderton School Complex will be in comfortable temperature conditions to operate at their best." He added that this funding prioritizes safety for students, teachers, and staff.
