State Rep. Brian Smith announced that fire and ambulance services in the 66th Legislative District will receive $320,214 in grants. This funding is sourced from slot machine gaming proceeds and not from General Fund tax revenue. The grants aim to support public safety missions of these entities.
Smith stated, "Our EMTs, paramedics and firefighters are ready at a moment’s notice to keep Jefferson and Indiana counties safe. But many of these departments are volunteer or nonprofit organizations. This funding is so important to offset their operating costs, allowing them to continue helping our communities."
The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Office of the State Fire Commissioner administer the grants, with all qualified applicants receiving funding. Eligible projects include facility upgrades, equipment purchase or repair, training, and debt reduction. Recipients need to file a grant agreement with the OSFC to secure their funds.
The grants were distributed among various fire and ambulance companies, including Big Run Volunteer Fire Company receiving $14,228.68 and Brockway Volunteer Fire Hose Company receiving $14,617.72.
The funding has been welcomed as it assists volunteer and nonprofit organizations in managing operational expenses, ensuring they can continue their vital services to the community.
