Meet the archangels

Aa

St. Tobias Parish issued the following announcement on Sept. 27.

Michael, Raphael and Gabriel are named as the three archangels in Scripture. Each with their own mission — Michael protects, Gabriel announces and Raphael guides — their feast day is Sept. 29. Learn more about the archangels as a family:

ST. MICHAEL is the leader of all of the archangels and is in charge of protection, courage, strength, truth and integrity. Michael is often depicted as carrying a flaming sword to protect and safeguard humanity.

ST. GABRIEL is a messenger who delivered the good news to Elizabeth and Mary of the impending births of each one’s child — that is, John the Baptist and Jesus. Gabriel’s name means “the strength of God” as he is one of the strongest of all of the archangels.

ST. RAPHAEL’S name means “the healing power of God,” and he is known as a healing spirit and guide. Raphael is the patron saint of travelers because of the help he provided Tobias during Tobias’ travels in the Book of Tobit.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
