Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) has received a $2 million allocation from the 2024-2025 state budget for its proposed college of osteopathic medicine. This funding follows a similar allocation from the previous year's budget and is aimed at establishing what would be the only public university-based college of osteopathic medicine in Pennsylvania.

Senator Joe Pittman and Representative Jim Struzzi announced this development during a reception welcoming Dr. Ryan Smith and Dr. Luke Mortensen, who have been appointed as founding associate deans for clinical and preclinical affairs, respectively.

"The need for skilled health care is significant and becoming more dire every day," stated Sen. Pittman, emphasizing the importance of addressing healthcare needs in rural communities across Pennsylvania.

The proposed college has already formed clinical training partnerships with Punxsutawney Area Hospital and Indiana Regional Medical Center, providing practical learning opportunities for future graduates. Rep. Struzzi highlighted the economic benefits of bringing more students to the area, which will enhance local healthcare capabilities.

Dr. Michael Driscoll, IUP President, expressed gratitude towards legislators supporting the project: "We are very fortunate to be joined by committed legislators... We continue to appreciate their ongoing support."

Dr. Miko Rose, founding dean of IUP’s proposed college, emphasized the project's potential impact on rural healthcare access: "We have an incredible opportunity to change the landscape of healthcare access... throughout rural Pennsylvania."

Currently, there are three colleges of osteopathic medicine in Pennsylvania, all located at private institutions. National studies indicate that graduates from such programs often pursue primary care roles in underserved areas.

The establishment process began with Dr. Rose's appointment as founding dean in November 2023, followed by appointments of Drs. Smith and Mortensen over summer 2024.
