State Senator Cris Dush | Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania Senate State Government Chairman, Senator Cris Dush, has voiced strong opposition to Governor Josh Shapiro's plan for automatic voter registration. This initiative is set to be implemented immediately through PennDOT without consulting the General Assembly. Dush claims this move violates the Pennsylvania Constitution.
Dush expressed his concerns, stating that "Honest, transparent and secure elections remain the cornerstone of our constitutional republic." He criticized Governor Shapiro for allegedly bypassing legislative processes and ignoring necessary checks and balances. According to Dush, "Circumventing the legislature – and the will of the people – is a blatant act of defiance against our constitutional republic."
The senator further argued that such unilateral actions could lead to unintentional or thoughtless voter registrations. He emphasized the importance of making voter registration a deliberate decision by citizens, asserting that it leads to a more informed electorate. "Our republic thrives when voters are committed and engaged," he stated.
Dush also highlighted potential risks associated with pre-checked registration options, suggesting they could result in individuals being registered without fully understanding their actions. He stressed the need for voters to show valid identification at polling stations to ensure personal responsibility in voting remains significant.
