Senator Cris Dush has announced the allocation of over $19.1 million in state funding aimed at enhancing broadband access across Centre, Elk, and McKean counties. This initiative is part of efforts by the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) to improve internet connectivity in rural areas within Senate District 25.
"Expanding access to broadband infrastructure, especially for the citizens I serve in rural portions of Senate District 25, is proving to be every bit as critical as our utilities and transportation infrastructure," stated Senator Dush. He emphasized that closing the digital divide would significantly impact families, schools, hospitals, local governments, small businesses, and industries like agriculture and fossil fuel production. "Securing this highly competitive funding is an absolute must for keeping affordable and reliable digital broadband expansion projects moving forward and making our entire region more appealing for future development and family-sustaining job creation."
The funding comes from the federally funded Broadband Infrastructure Program. This marks a key step in PBDA's broader mission to address digital disparities across Pennsylvania. The grant recipients are expected to utilize the funds by December 31, 2026. The PBDA retains the authority to reclaim any unused or misused funds.
The Pennsylvania General Assembly created the PBDA in 2021.
