Westmoreland County officials recently announced a plan to enhance internet connectivity in unserved communities. At a press conference, Westmoreland House members expressed support for the initiative.

“In a lot of ways, digital communication is a great equalizer for those who live in rural communities and have not yet had a seat at the table on this topic,” stated Rep. Eric Davanzo (R-Westmoreland), part of the Westmoreland County Broadband Task Force. He added, “I am glad to see that these folks are being prioritized.”

Rep. George Dunbar (R-Westmoreland), majority caucus chairman, remarked, “In today’s world, internet connectivity is an essential part of the work or school day. I applaud Westmoreland County’s robust plan that clearly recognizes how important our digital infrastructure is to our region’s economic growth.”

The effort has been led by the Westmoreland County Board of Commissioners and the Planning and Development office over the past year. A task force was formed to focus on goals such as economic growth, digital equity, workforce development, and health and safety.

A Data Collection and Feasibility Study surveyed nearly 4,000 addresses with suspected poor internet access throughout Westmoreland County. Findings revealed that 60% of residents and businesses have outdated or non-existent broadband infrastructure; only 4% have high-speed fiber optic cable.

This research positions Westmoreland County to better seek federal funds aimed at improving broadband access. The General Assembly established the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority to allocate resources where needed most.

“It is great to see all levels of government working together on this issue,” said Rep. Eric Nelson (R-Westmoreland). “Employers need to compete at the new pace of business and families need high speed internet access for everything from homework to home office. This is a win-win for our region.”

Rep. Leslie Rossi (R-Westmoreland) emphasized broadband's importance: “Broadband infrastructure is every bit as critical to our underserved communities and our regional economy as our utilities and transportation infrastructure.” She stressed timely action for local governments, schools, businesses, and medical facilities needing high-speed internet.

Rep. Abby Major (R-Armstrong/Westmoreland) commented on its necessity: “Having access to broadband has become as essential as clean water and electricity.” She noted how the pandemic highlighted its importance in daily life.

“Having reliable access to the internet is an important part of modern education,” said Rep. Jill Cooper (R-Westmoreland). She identified it as a quality-of-life issue affecting many families whose children face disadvantages due to inadequate internet access.
