Senator Cris Dush and Representative Stephanie Borowicz have announced that Lock Haven will receive approximately $500,000 to construct a new police station. The funding is part of Local Share Account grants distributed by the Commonwealth Finance Authority.
Dush, reflecting on his background in law enforcement, stated, "As a former law enforcement officer and retired corrections officer, I could not be more pleased to play a role in securing this highly competitive funding that will be exclusively dedicated to building a state-of-the-art, crime fighting facility." He emphasized the importance of supporting the police force in their efforts to protect the community.
The new one-story facility on East Church Street will cover 5,924 square feet and include expanded office space, locker rooms/restrooms, evidence lockers, IT equipment, and a secure garage/access point. Representative Borowicz expressed her support for the initiative: "I’m always in favor of funding our law enforcement to the fullest extent and their efforts to serve and protect our communities."
Chief Matthew Rickard highlighted existing issues with the current facilities located in City Hall. These include inadequate restroom and changing facilities for female staff members and structural problems such as a hole in the patrol room floor. Rickard noted these conditions affect recruitment and retention within the department.
The completion of this estimated $2.5 million project aims to enhance operational efficiency and personnel retention for Lock Haven's police department. The department currently provides 24-hour protection with 12 uniformed officers under mutual aid agreements with nearby municipalities.
This funding is part of Act 71 of 2004 which allocates LSA gaming revenues through CFA for public interest projects across Pennsylvania.
